Harrisburg is one of the most rapidly growing suburbs of Sioux Falls, located about three miles to the south. Niche.com chose Harrisburg as the #2 best suburb to live in the state of South Dakota in 2021. They also ranked it as the #1 suburb for young professionals and the #2 suburb to buy a home in. Although Harrisburg is considered a suburb of Sioux Falls, it is actually in a different county, Lincoln. Based on the latest U.S. Census (2019), the total population is 6,710, which is an increase of 600% over 2010 figures.  

Harrisburg Environment

Harrisburg is home to the Lake Alvin Recreation Area which offers residents swimming, boating and fishing recreational opportunities. The city has several neighborhood parks including Hugh Robinson, Ellis Larson and Heartland Parks. There are also several golf courses close to Harrisburg. Harrisburg residents are close to Good Earth State Park. The Heartland County Corn Maze is a popular outdoor attraction nearby.

Harrisburg Climate

Harrisburg experiences all four seasons with humid summers and cold, windy and snowy winters. Annual snowfall is around 37 inches. July has the warmest temperatures with an average high of 84 degrees Fahrenheit and January is the coldest with lows around 10 degrees and highs around 28 degrees Fahrenheit.37

Economy in Harrisburg

Like Sioux Falls and its suburbs, Harrisburg’s economy has done well and the city is experiencing rapid growth. Some of the largest employers are in health care, finance and insurance, education and construction. Unemployment is also low at around a rate of 2.6%.

Education in Harrisburg

Approximately 4,800 students are served by the highly regarded Harrisburg School District which has one high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools.  For higher education, students have easy access to the colleges and universities located in Sioux Falls, with National American University being the closest.

Harrisburg Culture

Harrisburg has an annual Harrisburg Days Festival in June featuring a car show, live music, parade and vendor/craft fair.
