All About Tea

Tea is located about 10 miles southwest of Sioux Falls and is situated in Lincoln County. As of the latest census (2019), the population was 5,598. This is a growth of approximately 250% over the previous census in 2000. Tea was selected in 2021 by Niche.com as the 3rd best suburb to live in South Dakota, 2nd best suburb for young professionals and 3rd best suburb in South Dakota to raise a family.

Tea has three outdoor recreational areas, Tea City Park, Prairie Trails Park and Howling Ridge Park.

Tea Climate

Like the larger Sioux Falls area, Tea has four seasons with humid and hot summers and winters that are cold, windy and snowy. Annual snowfall is around 37 inches. July is the hottest month of the year with an average high temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest month is January with the lowest temperature around 11 degrees Fahrenheit with highs of 27 degrees.

Tea Economy

Tea, like many cities surrounding Sioux Falls, has a low unemployment rate (approximately 2.5%). Job growth is predicted to be 39.6% over the next 10 years which is higher than the national average. Major industries in Tea include financial services, healthcare, construction, manufacturing and retail. Tea has a sales tax rate of 6.5%.

Education in Tea

The Tea Area School District has three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school and serves about 2,000 students.  There are no higher education schools in Tea, but students have easy access to colleges and universities in Sioux Falls. Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls is the closest college to Tea.

Tea is known for the annual Teapot Days celebrated in June and a Winter Festival.
